Today see’s all 20 Premier League teams in action at the same time for the final time this season.
With so much to play for at the top and bottom of the table, it is going to be one hell of a day with plenty of twists and turns. At the top of the table both Manchester clubs go into the last game on equal points with only goal difference separating them and favoring the blue half of Manchester by +8 goals. So unless Manchester United go to double figures against Sunderland, they will have to hope QPR who themselves may need a point to survive the drop go there and have the game of their lives. Although Manchester City have the best home record in the country there is a lot of omens for QPR/Man United with QPR’s manager Mark Hughes unfairly dismissed by City in 2009 will go there with a point to prove. QPR have a host of ex City players in Joey Barton, Shaun Wright-Phillips & Nedum Onouha. QPR centre back Anton Ferdinand is also the brother of Manchester United Centre Back Rio Ferdinand and I am sure Rio would have given Anton a very good prep talk for this game. Another question to ask is do Man City have the mental attributes to see this game out? Whilst we know Sir Alex’s teams have been involved in games like these for over 20 years. In my opinion and as much as I hate to say this as I dont like them…. Manchester City deserve to win the league tomorrow. The likes of Kompany, Hart, Y Toure & Aguero in the spine of the team have been immense. However, this season has been full of surprises and I have a gut feeling that Man United will have the last laugh tomorrow. In the bottom end of the table, QPR will need at least a point to stay up if Bolton manage to go to Stoke and get a win especially with Stoke only winning 1 game in their last 11. Lets not forget there is 3 teams battling it for a top finish and a Champions League place. Arsenal, Tottenham & Newcastle all had their chance last week to guarantee themselves a top 4 finish but none of them wanted to take it and all ended up dropping valuable points. 2 points separate the 3 teams but the worry for them all is who ever finishes 4th may still not qualify for the Champions League due to Chelsea playing in the final next week. If Chelsea win then whoever finishes 4th will be playing Europa League football next season and Chelsea will be the fourth team from England to qualify for next years Champions League. Spurs have the easiest tie out of the three tomorrow with a home game against a Fulham team who have only won 4 away games all season and with their top scorer Clint Dempsey out of the game too, it should be an easy three points for the home side. Newcastle travel to an impressive Everton team who David Moyes seems to get the best out of his players every season who have the incentive of winning and finishing above their rivals Liverpool. Arsenal who are third at the moment have a tricky away game against West Brom in which will be Roy Hodgson’s last game in charge of WBA before taking over the England hot seat. Arsenal know that a point will be good enough for at least a top 4 finish, however to guarantee them 3rd place they will need to take all 3 points. Other games tomorrow include Blackburn who travel to Champions League finalists Chelsea & Wolves who travel to high flying Wigan will get their last taste of Premier League football for a while as they will start next season in the Championship. Swansea & Norwich, who have both had great first season’s in the Premier League will finish the season with home games against Liverpool & Aston Villa respectively.
There are so many questions left to answer before the season is out. But tomorrow we will get these answers in what is building up to be the best final day of the Premier League in its 20 year history. Do Man City have what it takes to get the 3 points they need? Can QPR pull off a miracle and hand United the title & themselves another year of top flight football? Can Arsenal finish 3rd in what would be a great finish for them considering their abysmal start? Who will go down? Who will get in the top 4?
